About Us

At Alight Pakistan, we believe that every human being has the potential to flourish, but not everyone gets a chance to realize their potential. We are here to make sure that all people receive human-worthy service and that their essential needs are satisfied, but we don’t stop there – we want to assist people in their pursuit of building meaningful lives for themselves.

We are a human-centered organization. And that means that we actively respond to the needs of the people and align our work to the principles of justice, equality, and dignity. We are here to serve the displaced and underprivileged to co-create with them solutions for a better and brighter future for all.

Alight’s unmatched role in sustainable development and socio-economic empowerment of the citizenry, particularly for the women and children, makes it stand amongst the top development sector organizations in Pakistan.

Our presence in Pakistan dates back to 2002, when following the war and crisis in Afghanistan, some two million Afghan refugees sought safety across the border. We were the partner of choice for the Government of Pakistan helping the displaced through provision of protection services, healthcare, nutrition, education and building community resilience.

One of our greatest strength is our local roots – we are firmly based in Pakistan and in our work we are driven by passion and by vision to make this country better, to empower the people and to bring hope for a better, brighter future. We speak local languages, we know local communities and have strong relationship with local government and with community organizations. We work in every province of the country, reaching distant villages and urban inner communities that no other organization has reached. Alight Pakistan’s programs in Baluchistan, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KPK), Punjab, Sindh, Islamabad Capital Territory, Azad Jammu and Kashmir, and Gilgit Baltistan provide education, health care, clean water, shelter repair, mental health counseling, and community development services to 3 million people each year. Alight Pakistan bases its relationship with disadvantaged peoples on mutual respect and a compassionate exchange of knowledge and values. We learn from each other and together we work to make things better.

Alight Pakistan is currently celebrating the success of the nation’s largest ever intervention for out-of-school children of primary school age.  The ‘Educating One Million Out of School Children in Pakistan’ campaign was led by Alight Pakistan and Government of Pakistan, through Ministry of Federal Education and Professional Training, in collaboration with Educate a Child (EAC) program, a global initiative of Education Above All Foundation (EAA). But many people and many organizations contributed to the achievement. Our success then is a celebration of joint efforts of Alight Pakistan and over 28 partners: federal and provincial government organizations, NGOs and local grassroots organizations, universities and private institutions.

Through the campaign, running from 2018 till June 2021, we achieved and surpassed our ambitious target of enrolling one million out of school children. Working on the ground with local communities and in partnership with the Government of Pakistan we sought to uncover the systematic problems preventing kids from getting education they deserve and together we worked out innovative solutions and sustainable strategies for enrolment and retention.

Becoming Alight

We are and always have been about amazing global citizens taking action to change our world. Forty years ago, Chicago businessman Neal Ball started American Refugee Committee. He recruited a volunteer relief team who set off to work at the Thai-Cambodian border. Even in the face of terrible tragedy, that first ARC team did amazing work, displaying incredible energy and following the belief that anything was possible.

The next big step on the journey was to unleash and put into action that same abundant belief. In 2019 American Refugee Committee became Alight. We embraced the new name, dropping the label ‘refugee’ to emphasize human dignity, but even more importantly, we re-oriented our mission and values, becoming a genuinely human-centered organization.

Today Alight group of organizations work around the world helping displaced and disprivileged people in Democratic Republic of Congo, Jordan, El Salvador, Mexico, Myanmar, Pakistan, Rwanda, Somalia, South Sudan, Sudan, Syria, Thailand and Uganda.
