Education within reach

Education within reach

In the remote mountainous regions of Gilgit Baltistan, travel from one village to the other may be perilous, especially in winter season when heavy snowfall makes the roads obstructed. Those children who can attend a school in their village might consider themselves lucky. For many others, journey to a school in a neighboring village is impossible and they remain unschooled. Unless and until they get their chance at pursuing education where they live.

In 2020 Alight Pakistan opened several non-formal schools in the far-flung settlements of Gilgit Baltistan enabling out of school children to join school for the first time in their lives. Among such students is Syed Akbar Ali. This is what he told us about his experience of getting enrolled at school:

“I always had high interest in school and in learning, but my parents did not want to send me to the school located in nearby village. But when Alight has established a school here the teacher came to our home and mobilized our parents. Now by the grace of Allah and sincere effort of teachers and Alight staff I am studying in NFS Syedabad. My teacher motivated me to work hard and also made us aware of the importance of education. Because of all support I received from my teachers and parents I am among the best performing students in the school”.
